The Wonders of Heirlooms

While a friend was at my house for a couple of days, she was looking at luxury watches for sale at watchsea24.com. She then started telling me about her grandfather's watch and clock collection. It was really touching to hear about him, his work, and his collection. It sounded like he had all manner of clocks, from really small ones, to mantelpiece clocks, to grandfather clocks. It's amazing to think that he knew how each of them worked and could actually fix them! I later got to see some of them and as a collection it was truly breathtaking! There were shapes that I had never seen before, almost like sculptures. I was so intrigued by the watches and clocks themselves, and these were made all the more precious by hearing about her grandfather. He sounded so patient and kind and the fact that he appreciated all these unique, fabulous pieces said a lot about his sensibility. I thought it was really great that his collection was so appreciated by his granddaughter. It made me think how nice it is to have heirlooms. It provides a lasting sense of continuity through the generations and they feel like a lasting link. There's something to the physical memory of items, it's different from the mental pictures we have–absolutely invaluable as those are, of course–but the artifacts bring a whole other dimension to remembering someone.

The major retail train Urban Outfitters has been accused of ripping of designer jewelry featured on Etsy. Jewelry designer Stevie Koerner claims that the company has been selling necklaces that look very similar to the ones that she designs, and that they even stole the same name along with some of her copy.

Stevie wrote on her Tumblr page that the World/United States of Love line that she created allowed her to quit her full-time job. Her pendants depict various states and nations with a tiny cutout heart, and are handmade in a variety of materials. This is not the first time that Urban Outfitters has been accused of pirating designs from independent artists. The necklaces have since been removed from the company's website, perhaps in the wake of the story appearing on New York Magazine's website, the Huffington Post and other online blogs.

Aerin Lauder is the granddaughter of the famed Estee Lauder, and she is now stepping out on her own in the fashion jewelry world with the launch of her own accessories line. With guidance from Vogue's Anna Wintour and NBC's Jeff Zucker, it sounds like Lauder will be a competitive force in the industry.

Aerin Lauder is already the senior vice president and creative director of Estee Lauder, but she is not satisfied with just being born into success. She wants to do something more creative and have her own business as well. Her accessories line will include housewares and china in addition to jewelry, and possibly more in the future. An exciting detail is that some of the jewelry is set to be based off that in Estee Lauder's own personal collection.
